Grapefruit
Grapefruit is a large, tart citrus fruit that is a natural hybrid of the sweet orange and the pomelo. It features yellow-orange skin with white, pink, or red pulpy flesh. Named for how it grows in clusters like grapes on a vine, it is rich in vitamin C and fiber. Grapefruit can interact dangerously with certain prescription medications as the juice contains furanocoumarins, which interferes with the metabolism of many drugs.
Storage
Store whole grapefruit on the counter for up to a week if you plan to eat them fast. For longer storage, put them loose or in a mesh bag in the refrigerator crisper drawer, where they last three to six weeks. Cut or peeled pieces need an airtight container in the fridge for three to five days.
Usage
Grapefruit is a versatile citrus fruit used for fresh eating, juicing, cooking, and baking, as well as natural skin exfoliation and homemade non-toxic air fresheners. Grapefruit can be eaten raw in halves, segmented into salads, or squeezed into juices, cocktails, and mocktails.
